Mosquito Control in Hong Kong: You Keep Spraying, But the Problem Is the Standing Water

[ Photo: Mosquitoes ]

Mosquito control is a different job from every other pest we treat: the “factory” isn't inside your flat, it's in the standing water around it. Aedes albopictus — Hong Kong's dominant mosquito species and the vector for dengue fever — can breed in as little as a bottle cap's worth of standing water. So spraying alone clears one wave and another arrives the next day; the order that actually works is: find every source of standing water → treat it → only then does adult mosquito control matter. How bad is the mosquito problem in your area? Check our monthly-updated Hong Kong Mosquito Index Tracker — the highest-scoring survey area in June 2026 recorded 40.2%, FEHD's highest gravidtrap index tier (widest distribution).

Common signs

  • Mosquitoes worst at dusk and dawn, coming through even with screens closed
  • Gardens, podiums, and rooftop flats bitten constantly
  • Estate notices keep mentioning mosquitoes, but spraying inside the flat makes no difference
  • Standing water at a shop entrance or back alley, customers can't sit still

How we work

01

Source inspection

We check every corner inside and outside the flat for standing water: plant saucers, floor drains, air-con drip trays, rooftop clutter, open drain sections. HK$350 inspection fee, fully credited when you book.

02

Source treatment

Clear what can be cleared, seal what can be sealed; for standing water we can't clear ourselves (structural or common-area), we apply larvicide and tell you in writing exactly which spots need to go through management.

03

Adult mosquito control

Residual treatment applied where relevant (mosquito resting spots: shaded wall surfaces, under plants).

04

Estates and commercial premises

Podium gardens and shared drainage channels are management-company territory: our property management service can step up inspection frequency in line with the FEHD index.

Pricing

Mosquito work is quoted after an on-site inspection — flats, gardens, shops and estates vary too much for a published “from” price to mean anything. Home inspection fee: HK$350, fully credited when you book.

Frequently asked questions

When is mosquito season in Hong Kong?

Mosquitoes are active roughly from March to November, with May to September generally the busiest — which is why FEHD's in-season index gets published on a tighter two-week batch schedule. Get ahead of the peak with standing-water management rather than waiting to get bitten first.

Why do I keep getting bitten when my neighbour says they're fine?

Mosquitoes aren't evenly distributed: flats close to a standing-water source, on lower floors, or facing plants or a drainage channel get hit much harder. Find the handful of source points around your flat and the situation usually changes right away.

Is one treatment enough?

It depends on whether the source is within your control. If it's on your own property (garden/rooftop) — one treatment plus ongoing standing-water clearance on your part can hold for a long time. If the source is in a common area, it needs regular treatment or action at the management level. We'll tell you directly which situation you're in at inspection.
