Flea Control: Treat the Flat Without Treating the Pet, and It Comes Straight Back

[ Photo: FLEAS ]

The biggest difference between fleas and bed bugs: bed bugs come for people, fleas come for animals. In almost every household case, the source is an animal — your own cat or dog, a stairwell that strays pass through, a bird's nest on the roof, or a rodent problem in the ceiling void. The adults you actually see are just the visible tip of it: eggs, larvae and pupae are hiding in the carpet, sofa seams, pet bedding and floor gaps, and the pupal stage is notoriously resistant and can sit dormant for a while before hatching. That's why clearing fleas properly means working on three fronts at once — the person, the animal, and the environment. Miss any one of them and it's back within weeks.

Common signs

  • Clusters of small, itchy red bites around the ankles and lower legs (a different pattern from bed bugs' straight-line bites — see our bite comparison guide if you're not sure which)
  • A pet scratching or biting at its fur constantly, with visibly irritated skin
  • Stand on the carpet in white socks — if dark specks jump onto the sock, that's fleas
  • Strays are common near your building, or you've just dealt with a rodent problem
  • Reactions to bites vary from person to person — see a doctor if symptoms persist or are severe

How we handle it

01

Find the source

Which animal brought them in? We work through pets, stray access points and bird or rodent hiding spots one by one. Inspection is HK$350, fully credited when you book.

02

Treat the pet in the same window

If you have a pet, veterinary flea treatment needs to happen at the same time as the environmental treatment — do only one side and the other reinfests it straight away.

03

Deep-treat the environment

Thorough vacuuming (which removes eggs and larvae, and stimulates pupae to hatch early) plus targeted treatment, focused on carpets, sofa seams, wherever your pet spends time, and floor gaps.

04

A second follow-up visit

Pupae resist treatment, so a single visit rarely clears an infestation completely; we schedule a follow-up on a set cycle, and any recurrence within the warranty period is free.

Pricing

Flea treatment is quoted after inspection — whether you have pets, whether there's carpeting, and how large the affected area is all change the job too much for a headline "from" price to mean anything. For reference, one major local pest control operator lists flea treatment from HK$1,800 (checked July 2026). Our home inspection is HK$350, fully credited when you book, and we quote item by item once we've seen the property.

Frequently asked questions

We don't have pets — why would we have fleas?

No pet doesn't mean no animal involved. Common sources include strays passing through the stairwell, a bird's nest on the roof, a rodent problem in the ceiling or false ceiling, or even eggs and pupae left behind by a previous tenant's pet. We work through each possibility during the inspection.

How do I tell flea bites from bed bug bites?

As a rough guide: flea bites tend to cluster around the ankles and lower legs; bed bug bites tend to run in a line, in the spots that touch the bed while you sleep. Reactions vary from person to person, so see a doctor if it's severe or persistent — and if you want to be sure, the most reliable route is checking the environment itself. Our bite comparison guide has more detail.

Can I just spray flea killer myself?

It'll kill the adults, but eggs and pupae are much harder — the pupal shell resists insecticide, so it hatches later and you're back where you started. On top of that, if the source (a pet or a stray access point) isn't dealt with, they'll keep coming back no matter how clean the flat is. Thorough vacuuming is worth doing yourself regardless — it's the single most useful DIY step.
