Islands District has the most distinctive service logistics of any of Hong Kong's 18 districts. Tung Chung is a reclaimed new town with large estates and MTR access; the rest of Lantau, Cheung Chau and Lamma Island are dominated by village houses, some reachable only by ferry, and neither Cheung Chau nor Lamma has private cars at all.
That's not just a difference in pest environment — it's a real question of when we can actually get to your door.
A reclaimed new town with relatively newer estate buildings and direct MTR and bus access; scheduling a pest control visit here is much like any town-centre estate. Cockroach and rodent issues are mostly tied to shared drainage systems, and the defence inside your own flat is on you.
Older village stock carries a lot of exposed timber, and with no road access the sealing and repair work has to be planned around ferry times, which keeps termites and rodents on the list; some village properties require a walk after we land, so we always confirm ferry timing and the landing point in advance to plan the visit.
Cheung Chau and Lamma have no private vehicles, so tools and materials go on and off the ferry by hand. Ferry timetables directly affect when we can arrive — something a town-centre job never has to think about, but a normal part of service here.
Islands District has only two FEHD monitoring areas, Cheung Chau and Tung Chung — and Cheung Chau has run higher all season: 12.0% versus 4.0% in May, 9.3% versus 4.9% in June, 4.7% versus 1.0% in July. Islands District's 2023 annual Rodent Infestation Rate was 4.8%, the fifth-highest of all 19 monitoring districts, up clearly from 2.9% in 2022. FEHD doesn't publish a reason for the rise, so we won't guess at one, but village-house residents are worth watching for gnaw marks around their homes.
